How to use AI for job interviews (a plan from your own answers)

The problem most people have

You've got the interview. Now you're googling "common interview questions" and reading answers written for nobody in particular. You rehearse lines that don't sound like you, for a role the article never saw, and walk in hoping the questions match the list. The gap isn't effort. It's that nothing you practised was built on your situation: the actual job, the thing in your history you're nervous about, the salary conversation you keep avoiding.

What generic AI gets wrong

Ask a chatbot "help me prepare for an interview" and you get a tidy list: research the company, use the STAR method, prepare questions. All true, all useless until it knows which role, which gap, and what you're most afraid of. The quality of the plan is set by what you tell it first.

What to tell the AI first

  • The exact role or title, and the company type (startup, government, agency)
  • Where you are in the search: applying with no interviews, interviewing with no offers, weighing offers
  • What worries you most: the CV gap, the interview itself, networking, salary talk, age or bias
  • Your three strongest results from the last two years, in plain numbers where possible
  • The one question you dread
  • How you learn best: rehearsing aloud, writing answers, being coached

What a plan built from your answers looks like

Fictional example. Persona: broadcast technician moving into a production-coordinator role, worried about the "why the change?" question and salary.

Answer bank — "Why move from technical to coordination?" "Eight years on the technical side taught me how a live show actually fails — and that most failures start in planning. I've been doing the coordination work informally for two years: crew calls, run sheets, supplier timing. I want the role where that is the job." Rehearsal prompt (paste into any AI): "Act as a hiring manager for a production-coordinator role at a mid-size events company. Ask me one question at a time. After each answer, give me one line of honest feedback and one sharper rewrite. Start with: 'Walk me through how you'd handle a supplier arriving two hours late on show day.'" Salary line: "Based on what I've seen advertised for this role in Brisbane, I'm expecting a range of A$X–Y. Where does this position sit?"

Do this today

  1. Write the three results you're proudest of, with a number in each. 2. Run the rehearsal prompt once, out loud, for 15 minutes. 3. Send one message to a person who already does the role and ask what they wish they'd known.
